Do those who download music illegally have to worry?

Increasingly the answer is YES!

Consider this...

Most of us would never even consider stealing something; perhaps a picture, money or a piece of clothing from a friend’s house. Our sense of right and wrong keeps most of us from doing something so selfish and antisocial. Yet when it comes to stealing digital recordings of copyrighted music, people somehow seem to think the same rules don’t apply—even though criminal penalties can be as high as five years in prison or $250,000 in fines.

Contrary to some popular opinion, illegally downloading or copying copyrighted music is the same as stealing; there is no difference.

Music piracy doesn’t just affect the music industry, it affects you as well. When you use software that facilitates illegal downloads you open your computer to unwanted pornography, security breaches, and viruses. Illegal downloading and file-sharing is also subject to federal prosecution.

Here are a few facts:

• The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) can sue for as much as $150,000
per song or track that is illegally downloaded.

• Almost 2000 individuals have been sued by the RIAA for illegally downloading as of March, 2004.

• More than 400 individuals have settled, paying fines averaging $3000.

• The Department of Justice recently announced the creation of the Intellectual Property Task Force, which examines all aspects of how the DOJ handles intellectual property issues.

Is downloading and uploading music really stealing?

If it’s done without the permission of the copyright holder, it’s legally no different than walking into a music store, stuffing a CD into your pocket, and walking out without paying for it.

A completely new solution:

Buying music socially in the places you most enjoy hanging out through the IF Music Kiosk will it will help keep your iPod, MP3 player, personal pc or laptop safe from viruses, while allowing you to make impulse purchases when you are with friends or during while relaxing, shopping or just waiting around .

At the same time the music industry and law enforcement can relax in the knowledge that all purchases are 100% legal and worry free.

Increasingly illegal music downloads are being monitored. Those who think they won’t get caught have only to look at cases involving hundreds of thousands of dollars simply stealing a
few of dollars of music. As one example of a recent case:

NEW YORK: A federal jury in Boston on Friday ordered a graduate student to pay $22,500 per song to four record labels, who sued him for illegally downloading and sharing music.

Joel Tenenbaum, 25, was found to have illegally downloaded 30 songs and ordered to pay a total of $675,000 to the plaintiffs.

He was only the second person in the US to have been sued for downloading music over the Internet.

In the previous case, a Minnesota jury ordered Jammie Thomas-Rasset to pay $80,000 for infringing 24 songs, totaling
$1.92 million.

Lawyers for the record companies had argued that Tenenbaum was a "hardcore and habitual infringer" who had started downloading
music in 1999 and continued even after he was sued.

  2. Your little kiosk looks fun! I have been back to this blog 3 times and each time I am captivated by your little munchkin. She sticks in your mind I know I cannot wait to try one and be a regular customer. The illegal download issue has me wondering if I ever stole music if I did I did not do it intentionally. Great blog cool website really a neat concept.

  3. Downloading music online via torrents may be free, but the dangers far outway the payoff. The IF music kiosk sounds much safer and more convenient; I can't wait to see it released!

  5. Yes all free music is illegal when you download them online or some websites. Some artists on myspace and other places allow us to download full music but some only allow us to download the sample. If they allow you to download that music, then you don't have to pay for it. I suggest you buy the music online for just .99 a song and now it sounds like this kiosk machine is a great option. Even though those free songs are illegal, many people still do it, they don't care about that any more. You can still download it, but that's your own risk the risk can be high besides the message here about being prosecuted my cousin lost his laptop and his ipod because of a bad virus he got off of one of those "free" websites. Be warned.

  6. what if you take all the cds you bought over the years and turn them into mp3 files for your mp3 player? please tell me this is alright to do, I bought all my cds.

  7. My take is if I bought a cd and want to let my friends listen to them ort borow them that is my right as an owner of the cd it became my property when I bought it. If I stole the cd and lent it to someomone they in turn found out I stole it then I should be in trouble.

In the same vain if I steal music I should be prosecuted meaning mp3 files and I have no rights to do anything with it. But if I buy the mp3 files they are mine and I can let any friend I want borrow them.

Tyhe problem is that we live in a time when many kids have no regard for other people property overall. They do not think twice about downloading music with out paying for it. I am all for the book being thrown at them and the issues with viruses including the destruction of their laptops or ipods and the like.

In my way of thinking this kiosk thing is a good way of helping to keep many on the right side of the law while they are getting what they want. It seemingly has other advantages that help bring servises to us all in a very conveinent way. I am saying I am all for this in my neighborhood or my malls and any place else I go to on a regular basis. I can also say I will engouage my friends, my kids and their friends my neieces and nephews any one that buys this kind of music to use the if machine.

  13. finding your site was too late for me. I got the worse virus from a site I was downloading some new songs, yes yes I was getting them from a site that I did not have to pay for the songs. So far I need a new hard drive my brand new ipod is not working and I am totally wasted over this!

I understand the need to buy from legal sites the cost can be stupid just as stupid as trying to get something for nothing. I would have been way ahead of the game had I bought the songs.

My thinking is if I had this kiosk available like yours I would not have got a virus and defiantly would not have screwed up my laptop. Totally Bummed!

  14. A friend sent me the link to this blog about a week ago. I like the idea so I have been looking for the machines over the past few days. I can't seem to find any. I asked friends if they have used them or seen any, so here is the problem great concept! and it would be better if they were around for us to use.
